The Liebster Award is an award passed around small blogs as a way to put a bit of spotlight on them and make the blogger feel like people are actually interested and paying attention to what they do (which can be hard sometimes!). When someone nominates you for this award they pose 11 questions that need to be answered in the form of a blog post. This is a great way for everyone in the blogging community to get to know each other as well as a way for readers to find out a little more about the person behind the posts.
I feel so honored to be nominated by Brandi from Aunt Bee’s Recipes (Check her out at http://www.auntbeesrecipes.com/. Just make sure you tell her she’s pretty and that you’re super hungry.) Brandi has been such a great bloggy friend to me since I found her. Believe it or not, she and I actually have a lot in common – fear of spiders, hello! – and I think if we combined efforts, we could rule the world.
I’ve posted my picks at the bottom of this post. In the meantime, I’ve answered Brandi’s questions and posted them here!
1. Why did you start blogging?
Truthfully? My dieting friends got tired of me posting recipes for dishes I found on Facebook and for things I made, and so I decided to start a blog and a page for these things. (That way they could totally ignore me as they usually do. *dramatic tear*) Life is funny though – sometimes a simple adventure opens your eyes up to your true passion. Food is my passion. Teaching my friends that cooking is not scary is my passion. Dr. Phil and Pinot Noir are also my passions, but that’s beside the point.
2. What are three kitchen utensils you cannot live without?
Cutting boards (a jelly for meat, one wood board for fruit, and one wood board for veggies), a good, sharp knife, and a wooden spoon. (The wooden spoon sure works wonders for smacking the teenager on the bum when she’s naughty. Too bad she just thinks its funny.) And although it’s not a utensil, I never cook without a glass of wine and Billie Holiday or Sam Cooke on Pandora.
3. Where do you see your blog in 5 years?
Ree Drummond better step up her game. That’s all I have to say.
4. What is your favorite and least favorite food?
You cannot ask a foodie what their favorite food is. A foodie likes the food currently in front of them and treats it like an experience. Just go to Ca’Momi in Napa and order anything on the menu. Experience. However, my least favorite food is seafood. I cannot eat anything that once lived in water. Nope. Not going to happen.
5. What makes you most passionate about the topic of your blog?
Making cooking easy! I have learned how to cook just about everything through this blog. I’ve yet to tackle yeast but this weekend just might be the time. I try to dissect recipes and make them as easy as possible so even the teenager – who can’t follow directions to save her life – can make it. I bring in real-life experiences, from drinking wine while watching Real Housewives of Orange County despite the smoke alarm going off and little Tommy in the corner ripping the heads off of Sally’s barbies while she screams, to those nights where we’re cooking for one and indulging in decadent, cripsy pear and brie bruschetta.
6. What is your favorite blog post?
One of my very first posts was on how to braise a pot roast. I taught my friends how to braise, how to properly use a dutch oven, and explained it in a way that didn’t make it intimidating. A good recipe blog teaches you how to make the dish, not just explains how. Check it out here: http://www.thelazymomcooks.com/2014/02/cooking-101-braised-pot-roast-and-brown-butter-gnocchi-or-why-my-awesome-quotient-just-trended-higher-than-that-girl-quitting-her-job-on-youtube/
7. Other than blogging, what do you enjoy doing with your time?
Well, I have this thing that I call a job. It pays the bills. And before I became a blogger, it was my passion. I’m a teacher in the corporate world and I love what I do. I get to stand up in front of people and make them laugh. The more they laugh, the less they realize that they’re actually learning. And it’s memorable. (It could be memorable because of how much of a nerd I am, but really, it doesn’t matter.)
8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?
I’d want to live somewhere close to the beach because I get claustrophobic in the midwest. The town would need to have a daily farmers market. And there would need to be free wine tasting. Also? I’d want to have a glorious kitchen with tons of Anolon cookware, a pantry to die for, and a huge fireplace. And Ryan Gosling as my own private, shirtless butler. “Hey girl. Can I make you some hot tea?” Yes. Yes you may.
9. What is your favorite animal?
Dogs. But don’t tell my three cats I said that. What? I’m single and I own cats. And I blog. One day I’ll begin growing chin hair, too.
10. What food do you crave the most?
Chocolate cake. And donuts. I’m pretty much a walking carb.
11. What is your favorite (most addicting form) of social media?
Facebook!! I looooove talking with all my friends! And when I can talk food with my bloggy friends? Oh my. Better than that perfect Mai Tai on a sun-drenched beach while squidging your freshly painted toes in the cool sand.
